Now let’s get back to the article 👇👇👇
For this week’s post, we will explore the importance of understanding and leveraging platform-specific features and why it's okay to be different on each platform. By doing so, we can create optimized apps for each platform, maximizing their potential and delivering an exceptional user experience.
Mobile Platforms
I will be focusing on the two dominant mobile platforms, Android and iOS, and exploring how we can unlock their potential to create exceptional mobile apps.
By tailoring our apps to take advantage of platform-specific features, we can optimize performance and deliver a better user experience. For example, Android supports multiple user accounts, and deep integration with Google services, while iOS is known for its user-friendly interface and tight integration with the Apple ecosystem. By taking advantage of these features, we can create apps that are not only user-friendly but also offer added value to the end user.
Understanding the differences between Android and iOS is crucial for PMs looking to create successful mobile apps. By embracing the diversity of mobile platforms, we can maximize their potential and deliver apps that are optimized for each platform.
Platform Specific Features
Mobile platforms, such as iOS and Android, each have their own strengths and weaknesses, including unique features and capabilities. It is important for us to understand these platform-specific features in order to take full advantage of them.
By understanding these platform-specific features, PMs can make informed decisions about which platform to target for their product, and ensure that their product fully utilizes the strengths of each platform. Additionally, it allows for better integration with other services and apps on the platform, ultimately providing a better user experience.
Staying up-to-date with platform-specific features and capabilities is important in order to take advantage of the strengths of each platform and ensure the best possible user experience. Being aware of the latest developments and trends on each platform can help PMs make better-informed decisions and stay ahead of the competition.
The list below is some samples of the platform-specific features as of right now:
iOS:
Shortcuts / App Intent
Live Activities
Siri Integrations
Android:
Play feature delivery
Chat bubbles
Multiple and guest accounts
Split screen for phones
Same features but a different experience:
Widgets
Notifications
App Shortcuts
Another thing to remember is while one platform may have a new feature ahead of the other, it's important to note that the other platform may catch up with a better implementation.
Leveraging Platform-Specific Features
Leveraging platform-specific features is crucial for creating successful mobile apps. By utilizing the unique capabilities of each platform, your team can create apps that provide a seamless and intuitive user experience, which is key to attracting and retaining users.
For example, App Intent for iOS allows you to help your users quickly accomplish tasks related to your app by voice or tap with Siri and the Shortcuts app. This feature enhances the user experience by streamlining the process of performing tasks that require input or data from multiple apps.
Another sample is Chat bubbles for Android, which provides users with a more efficient and intuitive messaging experience. With chat bubbles, users can quickly reply to messages without having to switch between different apps or screens, improving productivity and making messaging more convenient.
By not leveraging platform-specific features like App Intent and Chat bubbles, you risk missing out on valuable opportunities to enhance the user experience of your app. In today's highly competitive mobile market, providing a superior user experience can make all the difference in attracting and retaining users.
By understanding the unique capabilities of each platform and utilizing them to enhance the user experience, you can create apps that stand out in a crowded market. Failing to leverage platform-specific features is a missed opportunity that can lead to a less-than-optimal user experience and ultimately, fewer users.
Why is it ok to be different
One of the biggest advantages of designing different UX for Android and iOS is that it allows your team to tailor the experience to the specific strengths and weaknesses of each platform, sounded like a broken record but it’s a fact. For example, Android devices tend to have larger screens than iOS devices, which means that designers can take advantage of this extra space to create more immersive experiences. On the other hand, iOS devices tend to have better performance and more consistent hardware, which means that designers can create experiences that are more responsive and polished.
Another advantage of designing different UX for Android and iOS is that it allows you to take advantage of platform-specific features and design guidelines. For example, iOS has strict design guidelines that emphasize simplicity and consistency, while Android has more flexibility and allows for more customization. By designing UX that aligns with these guidelines, developers can create experiences that feel native to each platform and are easier for users to navigate.
Of course, there are also challenges associated with designing different UX for Android and iOS, including the need to maintain consistency across different platforms and the cost and time involved in developing separate designs. However, the benefits of tailoring UX to each platform far outweigh the challenges.
Conclusion
Having different UX for Android and iOS can be a powerful tool for creating immersive, responsive, and platform-native experiences. By taking advantage of the strengths and weaknesses of each platform and aligning with platform-specific design guidelines, your team can create experiences that are easier for users to navigate and that feel natural on each platform.
